Hi Friend,
Welcome to this edition of Shea-Skins.
This month's featured article gives you four good reasons you might choose to use 100% pure, unrefined shea butter in your skin care regimen.
Of course on the website I give you 36 uses for shea butter, but I find that the unrefined pure shea is a very heavy oil, so I use it almost exclusively for the purposes noted in the article.
Oh...I almost forget. My new Shea-Skins-Hut blog is up now. Take a look at:

Pure Unrefine Shea Butter: Too Heavy for Some Uses, But 4 Reasons It Might Be the Right Choice for You

Experience the Anti-aging, Healing, Prevention and Skin Protection of Shea
Remember when you used to believe that since a little sunshine was good for you, that a lot would be even better?
Well, with the advent of skin cancers and melanomas, it seems those days are gone forever. Getting some sunshine is still good for most of us, but overexposure can be detrimental to our health.
Pure unrefined shea butter is a lot like the sun in that regard. While there are at least 36 shea butter uses for natural skin care-including being touted for its anti- aging, healing, prevention and skin protection and emollient properties-there are certain skin care rituals that are better left to using shea butter in a mixture with other natural skin care ingredients.
So why is this?
Well, if you are at all familiar with 100% pure, unrefined shea butter, than you know that it is a solid compound with a distinctive nutty smell to it. And for some, this smell, which dissipates shortly after the shea is applied to the skin, does take some getting use to for the uninitiated. Of course, you can purchase your shea with certain essential oils added to it to mask or enhance the smell, but then can you still call it 100% pure?
To use the pure solid shea requires a little extra time to spread on to the skin, and if you will be putting it on your entire body, most ardent users find it easier and faster to melt the shea down into an oil form so that it spreads easier and takes less time to apply. You can heat it at very low temperatures so that the compound does not lose any of its medicinal properties in the process. One easy way to do this is to set your microwave on the defrost setting to perform the shea melt down.
Once the shea is melted, you will find that it is still a very heavy and thick oil, perhaps too heavy for what you propose to use it for. In the winter, of course, you might use a little of this heavy oil on your face to protect it and insulate it from the wind and the cold, but in the summer time this oil simply does not work as well in its all-natural form. It makes the skin look greasy, so it really needs to be cut (i.e. combined with other skin care ingredients) if it is to be applied to the face.
So with the extra work that goes into the preparation for using the 100% pure shea butter, you can see that you almost have to make time to use this product. But the benefits are tremendous.
Below are four good reasons to consider making time for and using 100% pure and unrefined shea butter in your hair and skin care regimen.
1. Daily Application to Lips, Elbows, Hands, Knees, Lower Buttocks and Feet--The lips are quite delicate and can benefit from the moisturizing properties of shea butter which keeps them from becoming dry and actually rehydrates them. Rough areas of the skin such as the elbows, hands, knees, feet and lower buttocks are sometimes drier than other areas of the skin and can readily absorb this heavy oil. And, in the winter time shea butter is even useful on the face to shield and protect it from the cold.
2. Muscle Relaxer--If you suffer from arthritis or osteoarthritis, rubbing pure shea butter on the affected area can lessen the stiffness and provide some relief from pain.
3. Weekly All Over Body Oil Massager--Once a week it is a good idea to melt down the shea butter from its solid state, jump in the bathtub using about a pound of Epsom salt and the aromatic bubble bath of your choice. Of course you will need to take a shower after emerging from the tub to get rid of any soap residue left on the skin.
Once out of the tub, use this shea butter turned shea oil to massage into your skin. You do not need to dry yourself, just rub the oil into your skin so that it absorbs all the shea. Pay good attention to the feet, elbows and other rough areas of the skin that may have been neglected throughout the week or that require a little extra care. Using shea as a weekly all over body oil massager is a good way to keep your skin moisturized, soft and younger looking.
4. Hair Conditioner and Oil--African Americans maintaining all natural hair styles will find the use of pure shea butter oil as a God-send as a moisturizer of the hair. After washing the hair with black soap, apply a generous amount to the hair and scalp after towel drying it and before braiding the hair or cornrolling it or whatever other style you end up with. Shea butter, in combination with using the black soap to wash the hair, will leave your hair more manageable, easier to comb and softer to the touch. The hair will be well moisturized and have an almost silky feeling to it. These are the four main reasons to use the 100% pure African shea butter products to create radiant skin and shiny, well groomed hair.
For your other natural skin care needs, you can use a blend of shea butter combined with other natural ingredients added, and it will works well and be less heavy. Research has shown that as long as there is at least a 15% concentration of shea in the product that you are using, the shea can still work well as a healing aide and skin protector, provided it has not been overly refined or heated to high degrees in the processing of it.
